I’m very pleased to announce that I’ll playing a selections from moogmemory at the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds, June 24. This will be the FIRST TIME I’ll have played any of this material in what has now been my home town for TWENTY YEARS this year…
After a chance meeting with the lovely Haushka at a show in Latvia in December 2015, I’m delighted to be sharing the stage with this respected piano master. Composer/electronic musician Tom Adams, will also be performing.
SO, if you’re local, and fancy a blast of moogmemory before Tom and Haushka, grab yourself a ticket whilst you can…
This Saturday JUNE 18th I’m playing a special lunchtime moogmemory concert as part of Daylight Music, at the wonderful Union Chapel, Islington. And in the evening, playing Montauk Variations as part of the Transmission concert series, at St. Catherine’s Church, Telegraph Hill (and will be my first solo piano concert in a while!).
SO, if you’re a fan of music and churches but aren’t religious, then these will be PERFECT for you.
See you at the altar…
There’s still time to catch an exclusive moogmemory set on the BBC iPlayer. Recorded for BBC3’s Late Junction, in front of a lovely, welcoming crowd at The Great Escape Festival just a few weeks ago. If you listen carefully, you’ll hear me struggling with a brand new new piece: Dave.
The graphic scores inspired by the places and landscapes of Yorkshire created by local composers Katie English, Jez Riley-French and Nigel Morgan have been collated into one volume, ready for you the public to view via the exhibitions. Philip Thomas and I will perform the pieces on two pianos in Leeds and Sheffield, later this month. Fresh Yorkshire Aires is curated and produced by composer Jacob Thompson-Bell, whose own compositions and graphic scores are works that are as beautiful and engaging to look at as they are to hear.
Visit the FYA site for more information about the exhibitions.
Emerson’s Lake was an impulsive recording, made on hearing the sad news about Keith Emerson’s untimely death in March this year. As a fellow man of synthesis, he was arguably one of the great pioneers of live synthesiser performance; paving the way for others to follow…
Sussudio has always been one of my most favourite Phil Collins tracks, and thought I would try out the Lintronics Advanced Memorymoog’s MIDI capabilities, and put a slightly different spin on Collins’s pop masterpiece.
I thought it was time to save some archive footage from VHS obscurity. Both of the following videos feature the same McDonalds / McSlavery / McProfits / McGarbage / McMurder large-size T-Shirt (which I still own).
This is footage of where it all started for me, really; and features my first EVER interview…
The following year I was asked to appear as part of Jazz on 3’s first ever ‘Adventures in Sound’, at London Jazz Festival. I asked if I could perform with a band I played in at the time; The Electric Dr. M, with drummers Dave Black & Sam Hobbs, bassist Riaan Vosloo and guitarist Chris Sharkey.
This entire concert, which begins with a solo piano introduction, is the ONLY FOOTAGE IN EXISTENCE of this band, so sit back and enjoy the improv…
I’ll be uploading more videos from the archive soon, so you might like to hit subscribe on my YouTube Channel to stay up to date.
I have put together a synthesiser playlist for your delectation. I will be updating this as we go on.
moogmemory is released on Friday. England’s design work is peerless (the inner sleeve detailing is worth the admission price alone). There is a subtle embossing on the LP sleeve. All very satisfying.
As the moogmemory tour draws ever nearer, we thought it might be nice to share a few bits and bobs with you as the weeks roll by – starting with an incredible video trailer, by project collaborator Michael England. The featured music is Horn & Vellum, from the forthcoming album.
There will be more videos to follow so, stay tuned for exclusive sneak previews.
Also, tune in to BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction programme TONIGHT at 23:00 – I’ll be having a natter (live on air at 23:30) about the project, and they’ll be playing an exclusive new track, too.
Hopefully see you at the shows! x
